Chapter

Fifteen

They thanked Marjie for breakfast and Rosemary tried to pay, to no avail.

“Your Granny wouldn’t approve of me charging you,” Marjie insisted. “You Thorns are like family to us, Reeves. There will be no charging going on what-so-ever.”

Rosemary felt terribly guilty, though her dwindling bank account would have expressed gratitude if it could.

“Well, at least let me return the favour and treat you sometime,” said Rosemary.

“Oh, if you must,” Marjie said.

“Thanks again, Marjie. You’re brilliant.” Rosemary said, giving the older woman a peck on the cheek.

“Oh, it’s nothing really,” Marjie insisted.

“Come over for dinner, sometime,” Rosemary said as she turned to go, then remembered the other thing she needed to tell Marjie. She turned back. “Uh, and please don’t tell anyone what’s been happening to us up at the Manor. It’s strictly confidential, all right? It’s not that we have anything to hide. We just don’t want the attackers to find out through the grapevine that they’ve ruffled us.”

“O’course not,” Marjie said. “Mum’s the word.”

Rosemary and Athena left the shop, slightly reassured by Marjie’s promise of a secret kept, though they really knew so little about her it was hard to tell how loose her tongue was.

“She could be the town gossip, you know,” Rosemary pointed out on their walk back to the manor.

“Your Granny trusted her. That should be good enough,” Athena reminded her mother. “Besides, what were you thinking, inviting her over for dinner like that? What if we’re attacked again?”

“Actually, that’s a brilliant idea!”

“What!? Being attacked is not something you aspire to.” Athena scolded.

“Not being attacked, per se, but dinner.”

“Dinner is always a good idea,” Athena agreed. “What’s your point?”

Rosemary lowered her voice and looked around as they neared the edge of the village. “We’ll have a dinner party and invite all the suspects and watch them to see what they do and who is acting suspicious.”

“So, you want to get all the potential murderers in the same room as us, and feed them?” Athena asked.

“Yes.”

“Ridiculous! What if they slip you poison or attack you?”

“I’m hoping the house will help us a little,” Rosemary said, sheepishly.

“A great lot of good it did Granny Thorn,” Athena muttered.

“We can invite that police officer, too,” Rosemary said. “And everyone who is being friendly to us, so that there are more pairs of eyes watching for anything untoward.”

“You really want to do this?” Athena asked.

“Yes. Just think about it. It will be our hello-to-Myrtlewood party. We can invite all the suspicious people like the mayor and that lawyer, Burk…”

“I thought you liked him,” Athena said with just a hint of teasing in her voice.

“I thought he was okay,” Rosemary admitted, looking around the picturesque countryside as they walked, to make sure no one was listening to what she said next. “But did I tell you how much that vampire guy I dusted looked like him?”

“No, you did not,” Athena said. “Do you mean to inform me that you managed to dust a lawyer?”

“No, love. It wasn’t him, but there was a definitive resemblance.
